Most animal bites are not dangerous unless you are allergic to them. However, a poisonous animal’s bite has a poisonous effect on the body while others may not be harmful. Common types of bites in Pakistan include insect and animal bites such as wasp, centipede, spiders, snakes, monkeys and dogs. Following is the first aid for bites & stings in different situations.sni
General bites & stings
Firstly, wash the affected area with tap or lukewarm water and scrub properly with soap. Do not use turmeric, honey or toothpaste on any bite.sni
If the wound becomes reddish, apply ice cubes. Elevate the wound above heart level to decrease blood flow. An allergic reaction occurs within 10 to 15 minutes not after two days.sni
Consult a doctor immediately if the bite or sting causes breathing problem or dizziness.sni
Snake bites
Snakes are only a sign of fear for most which may aggravate the problem. 70 percent snakes are not poisonous.sn
Immobilize the affected area.sni
Wash it with soap and water properly, even if it is bleeding.sni
Contact a doctor. If possible, take the snake with you or take its picture so that the doctor could analyze its type and treat the patient accordingly.sni
Rodent (excluding rat) bites
The bite can cause an infection, tetanus and rabies (if the animal was infected with the disease). Rabies among them is the most dangerous.sni
Immobilize the area.sni
Wash for at least 15 minutes. Rub with soap as it inactivates viruses for some time.sni
Contact a doctor and make sure treatment for all three, that is, infection, tetanus and rabies is given.sni
